SPYDER was selected by the Indian Armed Forces in June 2006. In July 2008, India's Defense Acquisition Council finally approved the order in July 2008. Rafael was awarded a $1 billion contract for 18 SPYDER systems in September 2008 .The SPYDER air defense system was inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2017.
The Czech Ministry of Defense selected the SPYDER system in September 2020 and began negotiations for the acquisition of four batteries of the SPYDER air defense system. In October 2021, an intergovernmental agreement was signed between the two countries for the supply of four batteries. The missile systems will be produced according to the specifications of the Czech Army and in cooperation with the Czech companies RETIA and Vojenský techný ústav. Deliveries under the CZK 13.69 billion ($617 million) contract are expected to be completed by 2026.
The SPYDER-SR (short range) system has a 360° strike capability and missiles can be fired from standby in less than five seconds after target confirmation. The range of destruction is from less than 1 km to more than 15 km and at altitudes from 20 m to at least 9000 m. The system is capable of simultaneously engaging multiple targets and is also capable of single, multiple and wave firing, day and night and in all weather conditions.

SPYDER-MR medium-range surface-to-surface missile launcher Rafael has developed a medium-range version, the SPYDER-MR, with a range of over 35 km at altitudes from 20 m to 16 km. The SPYDER-MR carries eight missiles and the SPYDER-SR has four. SPYDER-MR also features a new IAI/Elta MF-STAR surveillance radar.
The main components of the SPYDER system are a truck-mounted command and control unit, a missile unit with Python 5 and Derby missiles, a field service vehicle and a missile delivery vehicle.
The vehicles are air-conditioned and offer protection against biological and chemical warfare. The system is based on a modular design and on-site system maintenance replaces modules very quickly.
The system can launch missiles in two modes of operation: lock-on before launch (LOBL) and after launch (LOAL). The failed launch method, as opposed to vertical firing, allows for LOBL so that the missile's internal firing is locked onto the target before firing. The LOBL mode allows the squadron commander to confirm that the missile is locked on to the designated target before firing, provides a high probability of destruction against highly maneuverable, short-range targets, and enables the activation of designated targets through additional optical sensors.

A typical SPYDER squadron consists of a mobile command and control unit (CCU) and four mobile fire units (MFU).
The CCU and MFU have their own power supply. The system includes an automated computer that helps operators successfully engage enemy targets in a tense battlefield environment. The mobile CCU has a surveillance radar and two operator stations. There is a radio data link between the CCU and the four MFUs.
The CCU combines local surveillance radar data with data from higher command and control centers up to 100 km away. It is also possible to receive weather pictures from other data links.
The Air Situation Picture (ASP) is displayed at the operator's workstation in the command center. When the operator decides to start, an automatic procedure starts. The CCU assigns the target to the appropriate launch unit.

The missile is fired in LOBL mode if the target is in detection range and in LOAL mode if the target is out of the homing range. The seeker searches for the target and switches to the homing phase when the target is detected.
Both Derby and Python 5 rockets can operate in LOBL and LOAL modes. The target is destroyed on impact or by a close guard.
The command and control unit is housed in a truck-mounted shelter with radar, an Information Friend or Foe (IFF) interrogator and communications equipment. The interference-free VHF/UHF communication system is for communication within the squadron and upper level command.
The Elta EL/M 2106 ATAR 3D surveillance radar can track up to 60 targets simultaneously. The radar works 360° and has the ability to work day and night in all weather conditions. The radar includes advanced electronic countermeasures (ECCM) to engage in dense electronic warfare.

Truck-Mounted Missile Launcher The SPYDER uses a truck-mounted rocket launcher equipped with a communications system and a 360° rotating, electromechanically controlled, turret-based launcher. The SPYDER-SR launch unit carries any combination of Python 5 or Derby rockets.
The Python 5 missile is Rafael's new ultralight air-to-air dog missile. Python 5 is a development of Python 4, with a two-band focal plane grating and an infrared image finder (IIR) that provides a very wide field of view.
The Python 5 retains the same airfoil as the Python 4 missile's control envelope, delta-shaped canards and two roll control fins, as well as the same rocket motor, warhead and fuse. Thanks to the wide field of view, LOAL provides an angle of over 100° from the point of view of the borehole. The dual-band seeker provides greater detection range, improved target discrimination against background clutter, and a lower false target rate.
In LOAL mode, target data is transferred from the command and control unit to the missile via the launcher. The missile's guidance and control systems are active for up to three times longer than the previous Python, allowing it to engage targets that maneuver to avoid the missile. The high-explosive warhead is equipped with an active laser non-contact fuse.
